Submit to Open Thought Vortex Magazine

Open Thought Vortex Magazine wants your work for publication on this site. All submissions will be selected personally by Shareen and Kara Post-Kennedy, the Open Thought Vortex  Editor-in-Chief.

Expect unusual interactions with your OTV hosts. If your work is of interest, you are of interest. Our correspondence won’t be polished, run-of-the-mill, or even to the point. It might be rambling, random, full of typos and slightly crazed mostly from Shareen😬. We aren’t your standard publication. While we work with you to iron out the kinks prior to publication, trying to sustain an acceptable level of normalcy for extended periods  would push us over the edge when lingering in the vortex is our preferred method of existence. Consider that before submitting, but rest assured that if we love your work, we’ll work for you.

We want your writing to be its best. OTV receives a lot of positive feedback on our editing process. We are willing to mine the gems and help you polish them. You and your work should shine.

We will accept up to 8-15 pieces per month along with guest posts during our guest series running through July (guests are unpaid ). We know all writing takes effort and passion. Writers with high readership may be invited on as regular contributors at which point there will be financial compensation. In addition, we guarantee no other pieces will be published on your publication date, and we will do our best to promote your work on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and our personal networks.

The agreement: This site will retain first digital rights, exclusive publication rights for three months (after which the artist is free to republish on their own site or elsewhere), right to republish in a future print and/or online anthology and OTV requests that future online posts link back to as the original publisher. By agreeing to publication on this site, you agree to these terms. If this suits you, read on!

All submissions should be your best and somehow relate to our magazine’s title. What is an open thought vortex? Please read the content of this site and decide for yourself.

Please take note of our monthly themes. We ask that you interpret them broadly. Address these themes according to what they mean to you. For example, “faith” is defined as: confidence or trust in a person or thing; or the observance of an obligation from loyalty; or fidelity to a person, promise, engagement; or a belief not based on proof; or it may refer to a particular system of religious belief, such as in which faith is confidence based on some degree of warrant.

June:  “Nostalgia”–let’s have some fun with this one!  We are looking for fiction, poetry, personal essays, ANY format about a time, place or thing(s) you feel nostalgic about…won’t someone write me a poem about those great urban legends of our youth?  We can’t wait to hear about all those things you remember fondly!

July:  “Celebrations”–this can be stories about holiday traditions, a milestone achieved, memories of a special event and more; how and what and why do you celebrate?  We want your funny birthday and wedding stories for sure, but also let us know how you celebrate life.

August:  “Heat”–Some like it hot in the hazy, lazy, crazy days of summer; interpret this how you like!  We’ll take fiction, poetry and personal essays about tropical locations, the surface of the sun, the bowels of hell or the good old summertime.  Not inclusive enough? How about passion, desire or dancing a tango?  How about packing heat or law enforcement?  Cooking?  Bonfires?  Fevers?  On the other hand, if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen…and submit for a different month.

Please note that the submissions deadline is the 15th of the month prior to publication. For example, June 15th is the submission deadline for the July issue.

OTV is currently accepting work in the following categories with the noted exclusions.

Please send 1-6 poems totaling under 2,000 words. We aren’t looking for pieces of epic length, but we are looking for epic beauty. We prefer 2-3 pieces that work together or as a series. While we are flexible, we treat a series as a single publication unless otherwise specified.

Please send up to three short stories or excerpts that can stand on their own and do not surpass 3,000 words. We retain the right to break up and publish your piece in serial format.

Creative Nonfiction

Please send us essays, personal narratives and slices of memoir that do not surpass 3,000 words. We retain the right to break up and publish your piece in serial format.

Art and Photography

We are interested in these, but are not currently engaged in their publication other than by request. Please include images by you with your written work. Images are not currently paid with the exception of commissioned pieces from our current Artist in Residence. However, we will consider images with content written about or related to the image. Please submit clear scanned images or photographs as .jpg attachments in email with a title and any information you would like to share about your artist vision, piece concept or what your submission means to you. Compensation for images ranges from $10-$15-exception guest series /regulars.

Email completed pieces and questions along with a bio including social media and prior publication links to with the subject heading “Submissions” followed by genre. Submissions should appear in the body of the email rather than as an attachment unless doing so compromises their form. Remember that we generally accept only 8-15 pieces per month, so get your work in now! And make sure to let us know if you would like to be considered as a featured writer or guest.

Regulars will get a regular column and prompts. As a regular we encourage you to update your bio whenever you are published so we can cheer you on. Due to our growth we are looking to grow our team.

Whether you are paid or guesting, you will receive red carpet treatment from our team. If you would like to guest for us, please send a pitch or completed work by email.
