Expect unusual interactions with your OTV hosts. If your work is of interest, you are of interest. Correspondence won’t be polished, run-of-the-mill, or even to the point. It might be rambling, random, full of typos and slightly crazed (mostly from Shareen😬). This is not your standard publication, literary journal, blog or website.
While we work with you to iron out the kinks prior to publication, trying to sustain an acceptable level of normalcy for extended periods would push us over the edge when lingering in the vortex is a preferred method of existence.
Submit your writing at its best. OTV receives a lot of praise for the content published. You and your work should shine.
We will accept up to 8-15 pieces per month. We know all writing takes effort and passion. Writers with high readership may be invited on as regular contributors and given their own columns.
Open Thought Vortex is a literary magazine with a primary mission encouraging activism especially for those left out in the margins. Social issues and equality will always be at the core of what is published. We do believe it starts with us. We will promote your work on all social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and work to promote you.
Additionally, our team of authors will promote through their personal networks. When submitting please take the time to include links to your social media profile or sites. Once you’ve been given your publication date, please promote your work. Our readers love to engage with authors. Please take the time to respond in order to engage readers and promote yourself!
This site will retain first digital rights, exclusive publication rights for three months (after which the artist is free to republish on their own site or elsewhere), right to republish in a future print and/or online anthology and OTV requests that future online posts link back to otvmagazine.com as the original publisher. By agreeing to publication on this site, you agree to these terms.
Please take note of our monthly themes. We ask that you interpret them broadly. Address these themes according to what they mean to you.
For example, “Faith” is defined as: confidence or trust in a person or thing; or the observance of an obligation from loyalty; or fidelity to a person, promise, engagement; or a belief not based on proof; or it may refer to a particular system of religious belief, such as in which faith is confidence based on some degree of warrant.
April’s Theme will be your chance to share your most embarrassing moment, confess, be silly! Tell us about a prank! It’s bleak out there! Let’s have some fun. Share something fun. Share what brings you joy in life!
May I…?What if you could ask one thing of the Universe, your spouse , a friend, Your neighbor, even yourself? May I have your ear because I need you to hear this? May I have your heart because I want you to feel this? May I simply have a moment of your time because life spins fast and I feel dizzy? Let May’s theme be your permission to consider all that you ponder, all you wish, all you wonder or any important question. Send us your musings on a curious topic or make a statement . May’s theme is courtesy of Rica Lewis.
Please note that the submissions deadline is the 15th of the month prior to publication. For example, December 15th is the submission deadline for the January issue. Due to the volume of submissions we receive, while we try to respond to everyone personally, this may not always happen. Don’t be discouraged, submit again!
Also, you may be asked if we can publish your work in a future month rather than the one submitted for; this is a compliment, as we want to give you the best publication slot possible. We often choose our themes based on submissions we love!
OTV is currently accepting work in the following categories with the noted exclusions.
Submit poetry totaling under 2,000 words. We aren’t looking for pieces of epic length, but we are looking for epic beauty. We prefer 2-3 pieces that work together or as a series. While we are flexible, we treat a series as a single publication unless otherwise specified.
Flash fiction or short stories or excerpts that can stand on their own and do not surpass 3,000 words. We retain the right to break up and publish your piece in serial format.
We accept these in the form of Essays, Op-Ed pieces or personal narratives and slices of memoir that do not surpass 3,000 words. We retain the right to break up and publish your piece in serial format.
Art and Photography / Art: We rotate our Artist-Residence.
We are currently looking to have a Photographer-in-Residence.
Once accepted we will let you know the publication date along with a preview of the authors work that will be the featured image or in the body of the author’s piece. We will link back and promote the beautiful images we accept.
We may commission a piece from Artist in Residence or photographs. We will consider images with content written about or related to the image. Please submit clear scanned images or photographs as .jpg attachments in an email with a title and any information you would like to share your artist vision, piece concept or what your submission means to you.
Remember to consider the themes.
Email completed pieces with the theme in the reference line. Please submit a bio and questions along with a photo including social media and prior publication links to OTVSubmissions@icloud.com with the subject heading “Submissions” followed by genre. Submissions should appear in the body of the email rather than as an attachment unless doing so compromises their form.

You May Submit for multiple issues /themes.
If you have a pitch for a regular column let us know.
