The Power of Thinking Positive

By Thomas Ives

There has been an increase in the sadness and gloom in the world recently. Some has to do with the election; some has to do with tragedy or even our personal daily struggles. This blog post is all about the positive that I have seen, read or taken part in recently. I hope that by the end you will have a more positive outlook on life like I strive to do every day.

Whether you live in the city or country, there are endless examples of positivity to be found in nature. It could be a tree growing in harsh conditions, a beautiful garden or a mother animal nurturing her babies. For me, it’s the rain. The sound and feel of it is very cleansing. It helps me “wash away” whatever negative thoughts or feelings I might be having in that moment. For others it could be birds chirping, wind blowing through trees, the sound of the ocean or just a simple walk through a park. It’s all around us all the time and many times we don’t even stop to notice it.

Did you know that there are a lot of people who never saw the sunrise this morning? They believed yesterday that today would be just another day…but something happened and they are no longer with us.

I have lost loved ones. They were mostly sudden but a few were able to prepare. Every morning you wake up, be grateful that you are alive. There’s a reason you are still here with us. You have a purpose in life that only you can fulfill. Will you take the opportunity today to achieve it? Will you embrace today for the opportunity it is?

The Jewish and Muslim Best Friend Costumes

In case you have no idea what I am talking about, you can read about it here .  What I love about this most is that if you were to look at the picture without any caption, you would think it was a normal picture of teenagers being silly. These two proved to the whole world that we can get along no matter what our religion or beliefs might be. The only thing that matters in our lives is love and acceptance. Everything else is just an added bonus. Here’s an awesome commercial from Amazon to help bring this point home.

High School Senior buys shoes for another student

If you have no clue what this is about, read it here.  This is just one of the many stories I have seen this year that brought me so much joy. We see stories every single day about the bad things kids and teenagers are doing but we consistently ignore the positive ones. You want to know what the future is going to be like? Take a look at the children in your life. Are they teasing and bullying other children? OR Are they going out of their way to improve the lives of others? I hope they are doing the positive and that you are one of the people influencing them to live this way.

I love sports and this is why. When you are taught and trained the right way, the sport you play can have a positive effect on yourself and others. Sports in not all about wins and losses. It’s about development, teamwork, and overcoming struggles. What this football team did will last forever; it brings hope into our lives when we see something like this happen.

Amazing Dogs

If you are an animal lover like me, then you know the awesome influence dogs have on our lives. They bring so much love, joy, and peace. There are two dogs that I want to share with you today. This first is Appa and the other is Amadeus; I hope you can learn about the positive impact a service dog has on someone’s life. I have seen firsthand how much the lives of the owners have improved because of these dogs.

#LinkYourLife group

I can’t write enough about this group. This group has helped me grow as a writer and also with spreading positivity to others. The group continues to grow and that’s a great thing. The more people involved in the group means that I can reach more with my inspiration. If you want to take your life to the next level, I encourage to join a group that will help you achieve it.

I understand that there are bad things happening in the world. They were happening yesterday and they will continue to happen in the future. You have the ability to change your focus from the negative and towards the positive. Focusing on the positive will help relieve stress, open your mind / heart towards others and most importantly… it will put a smile on your face. There are positive things happening all around us every second of our lives that we need to focus on. Are you?

  1. You are so right, we need to focus more on the positive things in life; so that we can get through all the negative. Yes, it is important to know what is going on in the world around us, but that includes more than just the bad things that are happening. If only the news media would take this to heart more.

  2. Thank you!

Yesterday the Globe and Mail (Canada) published an article on alumni students who encourage first years students with positive messages to give them a boost while studying for exams. I loved that!

I did the snow clearing for my two elderly neighbours this morning and felt so grateful that I have the health and energy to do that. It is not a burden, it helped me to face this day in a more positive way than I did when I woke up (too early). The sun is shining, it is not too cold and despite all that is happening…there are people like you who see the positives <3!

  3. Umm, my favorite ingredients for a purposeful life — kindness and the outdoors. Both offer different connectivity that gives life meaning no matter the gloom of world events and circumstances. A good recipe for positivity. Thank you, Thomas.
