Read Shareen on Raising Mothers

Recently, I shared a deeply personal story featured on Raising Mothers. I was honored to share my story with this publication because of the courage so many other mothers displayed by sharing on this site. Ultimately, the goal of any story I share about myself should convey my hope. I believe that there is always room for growth. I believe that there is always a silver lining.

Open Thought Vortex was never intended to be a platform for my story. As it has grown, I have discovered that in order to tell your stories, I have to share my own. You will find many compelling voices on Raising Mothers just as you do here.

From my essay:

We are a work in progress. I don’t want my children to read this thinking they are not loved by their family. I don’t believe that is the case. I share my story because turning away from ignorant remarks got us here. I stayed the course only to be worn down. As a couple we decided that moving forward I would not have to remain silent. My relationship with my in-laws is a work in progress. I am certain that if I can make peace with them they will find a way to make peace with me.”

Please read my story. Leave a comment. Ask a question. Read the stories shared by the other mothers. Connect.

  1. Thank you for sharing your story, Shareen. It is an important one to tell. So much division for such inadequate reasons. I’m so pleased that you and Ben found each other. It’s interesting that good fruit can grow in unexpected places. We all have the choice to be good fruit regardless of the tree on which we grew.

  2. I love that you’re finding the silver lining, in spite of how much you have been hurt. In my mind, staying positive helps a lot. It sounds like you have made such great strides in your life. Women’s unique stories must be shared and never silenced. It hurts too much to keep it all inside!
