Awake

"Rufous Hummingbird Perched" captured by Bill Garrett

I wake with ringing in my ears.

Body fire. Vertigo.
Numbness in toes and fingers.

Deep slow breaths
and a noticing taught to me by the graduate student
every Thursday.

Outside,
a hummingbird
paused in the sun along bare branch.

I walk out into the red sand
pushing the jelly
from my thin legs.

Wide blue belly sky
Yellow tulips
and White cloud audacity.
